Hi Karry,
Thanks for the really prompt response-it has helped to put my mind at ease. I guess I am very fortunate in that my salary is well above the 30,000 mark. My housing budget seems to be about 20,000B per month. I will be working in the Asoke Towers which has both MRT as well as SkyTrain conveniently near. Do you have any suggestions? What do you most enjoy doing for leisure? Any hints or ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks Again,
Gabriel
Hi Gabriel,
Thanks for your email. As for salary in Bangkok I wouldn't accept an offer any less than 30K. It depends on your standard and which area you want to live in but for example, I currently live in Bangplad just west of the river, opposite Banglumpoo/KhaoSan. I have a 1 room apt, with hot water shower, a/c, internet, large balcony (length of my room), fully furnished (king size bed, wardrobe, dresser, table, sofa, fridge, tv cabinet), laundry (washed and ironed for me), for 5000. Bill's come to just under 500 per month. I spend on average 150baht per day on transport but obviously depends how far you travel to work and go out in the evenings), and mid-week you can easily eat out for 150 baht a day if you stick to local food, but I splurge a bit on the weekends on farang food so this tends to go up!! :-) Accomodation goes up quite a bit the further to Sukhumvit you live where to get decent digs you can probably think about 15K+. Obviously if you're on 30K er month you've only got that to spend for the rest of the month. Hey, check out ajarn.net - its a great website where you'll find out tonnes more. I'm also on face book under 'Karry Meyrick' if you want to add me. I hope this has helped but if you have any other questions please don't hesitate.
Cheers, Karry.
Hi Karry, I am a teacher from the US moving to Thailand to teach on an expat package (sponsored by a US counterpart to the school for whom I will be working.) My question is, what is the requisite monthly salary needed to maintain an enjoyable lifestyle not dissimilar from the Western standard. Hope you are having a good time and I would welcome any advice you may have to a newbie farang teacher from New Orleans! Thanks
